Lessons from history and the impact of September 11 Now that British South Asian Muslims (Bangladeshis, Indians and Pakistanis) have reached the third generation, issues of concern have shifted from cultural assimilation and social integration to religious identity and discrimination. The first generation of South Asian Muslims maintained religious and cultural norms hidden within the private realm or community spheres. Subsequent generations have grappled with issues of integration and racism in the climate of the early 1960s; cultural pluralism in the 1970s; free-market economic determinism and the rolling back of the frontiers of the state in Thatcher’s and Major’s Britain; and, the ‘third way’ centre-left politics of assimilationist New Labour.

Overall, it appears that as second-generation British-educated Muslims join the labour market, the occupational pattern is slowly changing. It is relevant to mention here that very few Muslim women work as compared to white women and other ethnic groups. For example, according to the 2001 census the economic activity rate for Pakistani and Bangladeshi women was very low, 29 and 25 respectively, compared with 60 per cent for white, 62 per cent for black and 57 per cent for Indian women. Generally, Muslims hold menial jobs, are employed in older industries, have lower incomes and are vulnerable to unemployment.

Educationally, the Muslim population is relatively poorly qualified. 2 shows that over 40 per cent had no educational qualifications in the 2001 census. However, the profile is not too dissimilar to that of the population as a whole. 3). 3 also shows that Muslims have the smallest percentage of their population in the top three professional occupations. In turn, the combination of young age, poor qualifications and poor jobs leads to an unfavourable tenure pattern in housing compared to other religious groups.
