Calamity lives on in films and novels. Hollywood’s plots tend to play up her romances. In the 1937 film The Plainsman, Jean Arthur played Calamity Jane to Gary Cooper’s Wild Bill. Jane Russell had fun with the role in a 1948 comedy called The Paleface. Doris Day sang and danced the title role in the 1953 film Calamity Jane. Television produced its own Calamity Jane in 1982. A tough-as-nails Jane Alexander saves Wild Bill’s life in an early scene. In 1995, television turned Larry McMurtry’s novel Buffalo Girls into a mini-series.

Could all this be true? Research turns up many holes in the story. No one ever found the “Rev. Warren” who signed the wedding certificate. The Cunard Line never employed a Captain James O’Neill. Those who knew Calamity doubted that she kept a diary. The story is unlikely—but it might be true.
