It is indicated by the finding that parent caregivers had little choice. Over the two and a half years for which caregivers were followed up, none of the children being cared for died and only 8% of parent caregivers relinquished their role for other reasons, mostly a change in family arrangements. Three times as many spouse and adult offspring caregivers relinquished their roles, about half due to the death of the person being cared for. Although only some one in five carers indicated that they had considered using residential care, the proportion among adult offspring and other carers was twice as high as among spouse and parent carers, and acceptance of this option was highly predictive of relinquishment of caregiving.
