Evangelical Protestant theologians continue to struggle with the concept and understanding of myth. For example, the prominent twentieth-century evangelical theologian Carl F. H. Henry writes: “The term myth has acquired a bewildering ambiguity of connotation in respect to religious thought.  .  . and on what cognitive basis we affirm this to be the case. Contemporary neo-Protestant writers seem to employ the term myth as a linguistic device for evading the problem of truth” (Henry, God, Revelation and Authority, 59–69).

But what was it about allegory that Tolkien found so objectionable? The similarity of allegory to myth and fantasy would lead one to conclude that an author who enjoys one would naturally find the other two forms equally appealing. Why not Tolkien? Tolkien had three criticisms of allegory. First, there was the question of degree. If X was being used allegorically, then why not Y? And Tolkien leveled this criticism against the writer as well as the reader. Not only did Tolkien see a danger in a reader interpreting something allegorically that the writer never intended, but he found it equally perilous for the writer to put in so much allegory that it left the reader confused about the true meaning.
